Here a little band of courageous Christianwomen led by the widow of Judge Thompson, emboldened by theirconsecrated ideals, began this crusade, praying in and before the sa-loons amid the jeers and scoffs of the passers-by, but from this littleband there developed the world-wide organization known as theWomens Christian Temperance Union, a movement that has gainedmomentum until now their cherished ideal of a saloonless Americais to be realized. Mr. Cumberlands father, William Cumberland, was born inPennsylvania at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahelarivers in 1821, and when ten years of age he removed with his parentsto Ohio and settled on a new farm eighteen miles south of was timber land and they cleared and improved it, William HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY 483 in this arduous pioneer life. Julians mother before her marriage wasMary O. Cornetet, born near Buffalo, N. Y., of French parents, whocame from France to Buffalo, N. Y. She came with her parents toMowrystown, Highland County, Ohio, when that section was sparselysettled, and they became pioneer settlers of that region; GrandfatherThomas Cumberland, born in Delaware, died on the original Cum-berland place in Highland County, Ohio. Great-grandfather Cum-berland came from England, of old Presbyterian stock. WilliamCumberland and his wife owned the old Cumberland farm and rearedtheir family there and there he passed away on the old home farm in1871, esteemed and honored in the community that he had done agreat part in developing. The mother passed away in 1907
