While on shore duty inNew York city in 1890 and 1891, he studiedand was admitted to the bar for New Jerseyas an Attorney-at-law in Nov., 1891. Hewrote several pamphlets on steam engineer-ing and other professional notes and a bookon International law. While surveying in Jiquirica Bay, Salva-dor, the close fine work required causedserious eye strain which was made worse bywork as navigator of the battleship Maine. J., whose ancestors on both sideswere Holland Dutch who came to Americaabout the middle of the 17th century. Oneof her aunts is living in the second housebuilt on the lot set aside for an ancestor in1660 when the town of Bergen (now part ofJersey City) was founded.
