. Catalogue of Holland bulbs and plants : for fall Bulbs (Plants), Catalogs; Flowers, Catalogs. 20 Hiram Sibley & Co.''s. HE beauty and grace of the Lily is a theme as old as literature. From earliest times it has held a high rank in the floral kingdom, and will doubtless retain its prestige lor ages still to come. The reigning Queen of Lilies is the Auratum. It is a large flower, with a snowy white ground and delicate golden-tinted bands extending down the petals, which are flecked with brilliant carmine red. It imparts a rich aromatic perfume. The Auratum, which is a native of Japan, is not quite as hardy as most other varieties, and does not always bloom well under unfavorable circumstances ; it will, however, amply repay any extra care that may be given to it. The Tenuifolium is an extremely beautiful, small- flowered variety. It has delicately formed, slender leaves (as its name indicates), and diminutive flowers of Martagon form—smaller than the Chalcedonicum, which it nearly resembles, having, however, a more intensely vivid scarlet color. It is the choicest of the small Lilies. Lilies should be procured and planted in autumn as a general rule. They will thrive in any good garden soil, and should be planted a sufficient depth—not less than three or four inches in any case. To protect them from being thrown out by the frost, they may be covered with coarse manure or litter. July and August is the season of blooming. Although we do not offer a lengthy list, it nevertheless includes all the best varieties. While none are less than admirable, certain of them are of exquisite beauty. Each.
