Russalka monument, Tallinn
The Russalka memorial was erected in 1902 and remembers the loss of 177soldiers who drownwd when their ship, the Russalka (Mermaid), sank on its way to Finland in 1893. The statue, designed by Amandus Adamson, a leading Estonian sculptor of the time, consists of a granite pillar, on which an angel stands on tiptoe, holding up an orthodox cross in the direction of the Gulf of Finland. The cross was removed during the Russian occupation and subsequently restored after independence.
