The Lotus-eaters (also known as Lotophagi) are mentioned in the Greek bard Homer's epic poem titled Odyssey. They were said to live on an island off the coast of North Africa and to feed on lotus fruit and flowers, which were both narcotics. They would lure people to their shores and feed them the lotus. Once over come by the narcotic, the foreigners would never think of leaving. Adverse weather caused Odysseus to land on their shores and he had to pry away those who tasted of the lotus fruit and flowers - the latter are pictured here in this 1918 illustration.
