Von Karman vortices. Coloured Landsat 7 image of Von Karman vortices in clouds over the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, USA. These eddies form when fluid flows over and around objects. The phenomenon can be observed in bodies of water, but happens on a massive scale in the Earth's atmosphere when prevailing winds, in this case moving east across the northern Pacific, hit obstructions such as islands. Photographed in 2002.
