In conjunction with Memorial Day weekend, NHHC and partners took a moment to remember and honor the legacy of both ships. Houston and Perth currently remain at sea after their defeat in combat during World War II's Battle of Sunda Strait in 1942. Nearly three-quarters of Houston’s 1,093 crew perished at sea, and the survivors were captured as prisoners of war. NHHC is responsible for managing, researching, preserving, and interpreting the Navy's collection of sunken military craft, which includes more than 2,500 shipwrecks and 14,000 aircraft wrecks dispersed globally.
