The ridges, which at the superior extremity are simple and narrow, and parted only by asingle line, become at the lower part of the stem wide and flat, and are separated by a grooveof equal breadth, as seen in fig. 3, which is taken from b, fig. 1. Fig. 2, represents a portion towards the upper end, at a, fig. 1; and exhibits the differentappearance of the bark, and the under surface, when the cortical investment is removed ; theimprints in each case differing very much in appearance.
