Marmore falls, Umbria, Italy
The Marmore falls is among the one of the highest in Europe, and was built by the ancient Romans in the 3rd century by diverting the river Velino to flow over the top of a cliff and thereby join the river Nera, a tributary of the Tiber. The water of the falls is stopped twice a day and the flow of the river is used for generating electricity to power the steel mills at the nearby town of Terni
