Submarine cable telegraphy. 19th-century diagrams and graphs of research on the transmission of electrical signals through underwater telegraph cables. The first commercial submarine telegraph cables were laid in the 1850s. Here, the length is expressed in knots (nautical miles) for a cable several thousand kilometres long. The diagrams show the coils, electric circuits and galvanometer used, with graphs of the results. These experiments were carried out in 1859 by British inventor and engineer Fleeming Jenkin (1833-1885). Published in volume 152 (1862) of 'Philosophical Transactions', the journal of the Royal Society of London.
