Hewas public spirited; he was a part of the growing city, andhe longed that his city should have its highest possible bless-ing—the benediction and benefaction of the pure Chris-tianity of the Church of the Brethren. The truest devo-tion of the Brethren to public education is manifested in thealliance of the Brethren Church with it in her first work inPhiladelphia.
