One of the many Automobiles crushed when over a mile of the top level of Interstate 880, known as the “Cypress Freeway” in Oakland, California, collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that struck the Bay Area of California on 10/17/1998 at 17:04 at the start of the evening rush hour and the beginning World Series Baseball game between San Francisco and Oakland California. 42 people were killed by the falling top level of the interstate freeway that cut through Oakland. The Cypress Freeway built in 1957 was the first double-decked freeway in the state. According to the United States Geological Service (USGS) the magnitude 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was the largest in the region since the 1906 San Francisco quake. Photo by Chuck Nacke
