At ContrerasSanta Anna was aeain defeated, August 20, while othervictories were at Churubusco and San Antonio on thesame day. The Americans were outnumbered, but theyfought desperately, and won against great odds. Scottnow was almost at the gates of the capital, whenNicholas Trist, of the State Department, arrived tonegotiate a treaty, much to the disgust of General armstice was concluded, but the negotiations came. PEACE WITH MEXICO 177 to nothing, and early in September fighting was re-newed. The high castle of Chapultepec was assaulted,and Molino del Rey captured, September 7-8, after hardfighting. The castle was finally taken by assault on the13th, and the city fell. This practically ended the war,in which our arms were ever victorious, and whichproved a training school for young officers, who foughton both sides in the Civil War. The treaty of peace was agreed on early in 1848, andratified by both nations, by which Mexico yielded all theterritory then known as Nev\^ Mexico and California, butincluding also the present State of Nevada, part ofColorado, and all of Arizona. To salve National con-science a large sum was paid for this territory. The Congress which met in 1847 was in no friendlymood toward the administration. The Whigs electedRobert C. Winthrop, of Massachusetts, Speaker, andgave the administration money for the war, but nopolitical support. In this
