The sacrifice of Curtius. Marcus Curtius a mythological young Roman who offered himself to the gods of Hades. After an earthquake in 362 BC, a huge deep pit opened in the Roman Forum which the Romans tried in vain to fill. After consulting an augur who responded that the gods demanded the most precious possession, a young soldier named Marcus Curtius told them that weapons and courage of the Romans were the nation's most prized possessions, so, mounted on his horse, fully armed and decorated, he leapt into the pit, which closed over him and saved Rome.
