Grand Ballon : Ballon de Guebwiller, Elevation 1,424 metres (4,672 ft) Prominence 1,072 m (3,517 ft) Le Grand Ballon (German: Großer Belchen; translates as big balloon) is the apex of the Vosges mountains, located 25 kilometres northwest of Mulhouse, France. Some still call it Ballon de Guebwiller, after the name of the closest city, Guebwiller, located 8 km to the east. It is metres high, according to the Institut Géographique National (IGN). The summit is equipped since 1987 with a radar used for civil aviation for air traffic controle for Mulhouse and Strasbourg Aeroports. Surrounded by a circular belvedere, this building was designed by Claude Vasconi. the center of the Radome is situated at altitude. from this point one can see 120km away, towards North, the Plaine d'Alsace.
