From that time on, Jouy prints were the vogue not only at courtand in the palaces of the nobles, but also in the houses of the richmiddle class. The sales and the profits were immense. The numberof employees reached 1,500. Oberkampf gave them their own houses,hospitals and old age pensions, and looked after their interests inevery way. Constantly the quality of the product improved and soonoutclassed the German, Alsatian and English prints. Oberkampfshrank from no expense to improve his processes. He sent agentseverywhere, even to the Orient, in order to discover the secrets of thebrilliant colours of India and Persia.
