Thecloisters, which are very extensive, do not join GERMANY that beautiful thirteenth century style of pointedGothic which is peculiar to the Danube and itsimmediate ncMghbourhood. This style is re-markable, from the fact that, imlike all otherearly thirteenth century work in Germany, ithas no KomaTiosiiue characteristics about churches of the Nifider-Munster, the Ober-Miinsler, and the abbey of S. Emmcram, alsoin Katisbon, an; early Romanesque works of theliasilica type, unfortunately nuich moilernizedinternally. The last named has a curious crypt. Germany, III.: St. Michaels Church, Munich, Bavaria; Interior of Nave; c. 1585. the cathedral, and are thus more like the cam-jMsanto of an Italian cathedral; they are bi-sected by a large vaulted hall full of ancientmonuments, from which two ancient chapels areentered. The larger, that of S. Stephen, is saidto have been the original cathedral, and datesfrom the ninth or tenth century. The otherone looks like a baptistery, and is thirteenth cen-tury work ; both contain their original altars. Close to the cathedral is a veiy remarkable thirteenth century Gothic church called the Alte-Pfan: Two thirds of the area is covered by vaulted galleries, and its architecture is of 207 at the west end, above ground, supporting achoir and altar.
