Omiš, Dalmatia, Croatia: old town viewed across the estuary of the Cetina River. Omiš, known in Italian as Almissa, is a port and town on the Adriatic coast, approximately 25 km south-east of Split, in Split-Dalmatia County. In the 1200s and 1300s AD, the town was home to fearsome pirates, with whom republics such as Venice and Dubrovnik made non-attacking agreements. Both Venice and the Pope tried to destroy the pirates by sending crusaders to deal with them, initially without success. Finally the pirates were defeated. Omiš became part of the Bosnian Kingdom and was later sold to the Venetian Republic. On the fall of Venice, the town became part of the Austrian Empire and remained under Austrian rule until the First World War, except for a short period of French rule in the 1800s. Today, Omiš is a popular tourist destination. Rugged mountains and tree-topped hills lie behind the town, with its seafront bars and restaurants.
