TA fire extinguisher sits forlornly amongst the debris of a collapsed building in Redbridge London

The City Gates building collapse site was hit by fire in the early hours of Friday morning. Four fire engines and a height platform were called to the scene of collapse to deal with the blaze which took almost eight hours to fully extinguish. It is understood that embers from cutting gear being used by contractors to dismantle the tangled wreckage fell onto combustible materials buried under the twisted debris of the collapsed building and caught alight. Due to the dangerous condition fo the site fire crews where forced to tackle the blaze from a distance. The safety zone put around the site has now been reduced giving access to a number of premises, although council services have been disrupted as several office blocks remain closed. Heavy lifting cranes have been brought onto the site one being used to support a tower crane that was being used on the site when the building collapsed. Investigations into the cause of the collapse of the multi million pound building continue.
