Our first men on postfound plenty of fruit and vegetables in the gardens which the thrifty French had caredfor religiously despite the nearness of the trenches. Only a few houses on the right handside of the river had been damaged by shelling. Many were the beautiful houses ofwealthy French citizens and seemed to be in good condition. The business part of thecity was apparently on the left side of the river. Here there had been more destruction,particularly about a chateau which we used as quarters for the
