West Springfield has a fine street,shaded with large elms, and containingsome handsome houses. It is twenty-six miles from Hartford, and about sev-enteen from Northampton. There is a fer-ry here, which is safe, but the waterruns very swiftly. The Mount Holyoke Female Semina-ry, at South Hadley, combines a practi-cal domestic education with intellectualinstruction.
