Ptolemaic mummy mask of the Aset-em-ach-bit, 3-1st cent BC. Kunsthistorisches Muesum Vienna INV 297. Cartonnage, H 41 cm. Mummy masks were placed over the wrapped head of the mummy. They do not represent a portrait of the deceased, but show him already in the state of transfiguration. The dead man has become Osiris. The divine identity is emphasized by the golden incarnate. Gold was considered the "flesh of the gods". The dead man wears a linen headband which is knotted at the back of her head in the form of the hieroglyph Ankh, "Life". A text from the 19th chapter of the Book of the Dead is written on the volume. Here the dead woman is addressed as Osiris, who is presented with the "wreath of justification" as justified in the court of the dead. The wreath corresponds to this mask the headband made of fabric, otherwise it is made of vegetable material.
