The 1916 caption reads: “Hobbema 1638-1709 Dutch School "The Avenue of Middelharnis" in National Gallery. signed and dated on the back of the ditch which separates the garden from the road. Painted in oil on canvas. 3 ft in h. x 4 ft in w.” Meindert Lubbertszoon Hobbema was a Dutch Golden Age painter of landscapes, specializing in views of woodland, although his most famous painting, The Avenue at Middelharnis, shows a different type of scene.
