X-ray of lumbar spine of male, age 36. Noticeable is compression of the vertebrae leading to disc herniation. The collagenous disks that are interposed between the vertebrae of the spine act as shock absorbers and most of the body load is transmitted through them. If a disk ruptures (prolapses), it may come to press on a nerve, causing localized pain. A common misconception is that disks can "slip", when in fact they burst and their gelatinous content is forced through the tough outer sheath that would normally contain it. When the rupture occurs lower down the spine the pain seems to come from the back or legs. A prolapsed or slipped disk occurs when severe strain causes the pulpy nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disk to be squeezed out and press on a nerve. The disorder may result from a flattening of the disks brought about by wear and reduction of mobility.
