The Pacific golden plover is mainly an Asiatic bird, but breeds in Alaskaand migrates to the Hawaiian Islands. The golden plover of America ranges over most of both con-tinents. Its breeding grounds extend along the Arctic coast and islands from Kotzebue Sound, Alaska,as far east as the northwest coast of Hudson Bay. The greater number go acrossto the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland, where formerly they arrived in late August and Septem-ber, in company with the Eskimo curlew in gigantic flocks that darkened the sky. From there theyset out in a southeily course to the Lesser Antilles and South America. For weeks they were seenby Banks fishermen flying south in large flocks. They commonly landed in myriads at the Bermudasand Barbados during this flight. Statements have been made that this flight to South America waswithout, stop or rest, but great flocks of plover have been seen by ship-masters feeding on floatingseaweed nearly 500 miles from land. Some individuals go south through the interior, and many more along the Pacific coast as far asCalifornia. In spring this plover avoids the Atlantic coast, and the great flight reaches the
