Typhoon Ketsana, satellite image. North is at top. Clouds are white. Typhoons, called hurricanes in the Atlantic, are enormous rotating tropical storm systems, hundreds of kilometres across, that can cause immense damage and flooding. This image was taken by NASA's Terra satellite at 03:30 UTC (10:30 local time) on 28 September 2009, as the typhoon was near peak strength over the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, heading towards second landfall at left. This typhoon killed over 700 people here and earlier in the Philippines. Country borders show Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (left) and China's Hainan Island (upper left).
