Motor boat arriving at moorings in the Banavie basin of Caledonian Canal near Fort William

Editorial use only. The Caledonian Canal is very popular with visitors and provides sailing holidays for large numbers of visitors. Many hire motor boats such as these for a week to cruise from mainly Inverness and south to Banavie and Corpach. The southern end of the canal starts just south of Banavie at Corpach and continues for 60 miles (96 km) north to Inverness passing through Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness in the process. The canal was built by Thomas Telford and opened in 1822. It is Scotland's longest canal comprising 29 lochs. The most dramatic part is the flight of eight locks at Banavie - called Neptune's Staircase. The canal is now mostly used by yachts and other pleasure vessels either cruising on the canal or using it as a short cut avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth.
