Detail of Pyongyang's Arch of Triumph

The Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang is made of white granite and is was built to symbolise North Korea's independence from the Japanese. It was constructed on Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday and only took one year to build. To symbolise his 70th birthday it has 70 azaleas around the main arch - azaleas are Korea's national flower. It was built in 1982 and is supposedly taller than the French Arch de Triomph in Paris although obviously has been modelled on it. Everything in North Korea has to be bigger and better than the alternatives!
