James Dewar. Portrait of the Scottish chemist Sir James Dewar (1842-1923). In 1875 he became a professor at Cambridge University, England, and, two years later, at the Royal Institution in London. He invented the Dewar flask (known domest- ically as the thermos flask) and used it to store liquified gases in his work on low temperatures. Dewar was the first to liquify and then solidify hydrogen. He also worked on specific heat capacities, electrical effects at very low temperatures, metal carbonyls, diffusion, dissociation of molecules at high temperatures, coal tar bases, emission and absorption spectra, high vacua, soap films and the Sun's temperature.
