The Day of the Dead festivities in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, California.
The Day of the Dead street festivities in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, California. This festival is said to be one of the most authentic Day of the Dead celebrations outside of Mexico. Members of the community create alters to celebrate the lives of people that have passed on, usually within the past year. The festival includes the altars, traditional and new music, traditional dancing, food, and gathering in the spirit of the ancestors. The woman in this image has painted her face as La Calavera Catrina, or "Catrina" which symbolizes the Mexican culture's ability to laugh at death. The Catrina has come to be intrinsically associated with Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.
