The Osprey Observatory The Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust has built a state-of-the art bird observatory in the midst of a remote Welsh wetland area. Tracy Norris (51) was a Hampshire-based GP with a keen interest in raptors, especially ospreys, but had never previously become involved in any volunteering of this kind. Having come to the observatory as a visitor she signed up as a volunteer in 2014 and bought a caravan on a nearby site so she could stay and work at the project throughout the summer thereby avoiding a 400 mile round trip to and from her home. Having been involved with the visitor-engagement side of the project she decided that she wanted to continue to be involved out of season as well in land management and so in 2015 she moved house from Hampshire to Machynlleth where she has joined a local GP practice. Quote: “I have always loved raptors and in particular ospreys. When I heard they were nesting here I had to visit and then to see them in all their glory was just a dream come true. When I first walked to the 360 Observatory it brought tears to my eyes - it is such a special place. “My involvement has improved my work-life balance enormously. The people are so friendly and we are like a huge family. I love talking about the birds and the animals on the reserve, the flowers and insects, and identifying other birds too. I feel so very at peace when I am at the project and as if I have ‘come home’ as my family are from South Wales.”
