Gaius Marius (157–86 ) was a Roman general and statesman. He played a key role in the change from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. He married Julius Caesar's aunt. He was also elected a Roman consul an unprecedented seven times. One of his opponents was the Roman statesman and general Sulla.
