Theshaft upon which the chains are wound is operated by a ratchetarrangement at the cud of the car; this may be equipped withan operating lever, as shown, or with a socket which can be operated with a bar. a piece of pipe, or a pick handle. Afterthe doors are closed the shaft creeps in under them, support-ing them and relieving the chains from the load. Skilled laboris not required to operate them. As an extra check the shaft islocked by a latch and dog at the end of the car. The mechan-ism i< thus simple and positive; the lading cannot be dumpedaccidently and there is nothing complicated to get out of order. \MERTCAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL.
