Slit-lamp eye examination. Ophthalmologist in a hospital using a slit-lamp ophthalmoscope to examine a patient's eyes. This instrument shines a fine beam of light into the eye, and magnifying lenses allow an optician or ophthalmologist to explore the spot where the beam falls. Some serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are symptomless in the early stages and can only be detected through this type of eye examination.
