Taungthaman Lake in Amarapura near Mandalay is crossed on foot via the U Bein bridge or by local boats. The lake itself is very popular with tourists who come to be rowed out across the placid waters to view the spectacular sunsets and the U Bein bridge in silhouette. Boatmen are on hand at the shoreline to be hired with their colourfully painted wooden rowing boats
