Paper manufacture. The plant shown here uses a new environmentally friendly process called ASAM (Alkaline Sulphite with Anthraquinone and Methanol). ASAM has been developed in an integrated project which is aimed at testing the performance of sweet sorghum, Sorghum vulgar, for bioenergy purposes. Paper is manufactured from the cellulose fibres obtained from the bagasse (dry pulp) of sweet sorghum. Sugars juices are extracted from the sorghum plants and through a fermentation process are transformed into ethanol, which has many applications in the transport sector. The project is funded by the Commission of European Communities.
