At the time the elder Mr. Holmes located in thiscounty, the city of Rockford was little more thana hamlet and the surrounding country mostlyowned l\v the Oovernment. Mr. Holmes followrdhis trade in the town for a time and in ISlfipurchased a farm near the city, for which he paid*12 per acre and which includes one hundred andtwenty acres. Chicago and Savanna were thenearest markets of the settlers, and they were thusobliged to live mostly off the products of the father of oui subject soon established a nurs-ery in this count3% which he successfull} operateduntil his decease, August 2, 1859.
