Papyrus plants growing in the fresh-water spring known as the Fountain of Arethusa on the sea-shore in Syracuse, Sicily. The nymph Arethusa has been associated with the spring since the times of the ancient Greeks. This variety of papyrus, cyperus papyrus, was used by the ancient Egyptians in the production of writing materials and other items. The largest area of natural papyrus in Europe grows along the Ciane River near Syracuse.
