THE RELOCATION OF THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD. sections of the line between Cheyenne and Ogden onwhich the old line has been abandoned and an entirelynew line built. In a distance of 512 miles, measuredon the old line, 158 miles of new road have beenconstructed with a saving of miles in dis-tance. In addition to this reduction there hasbeen established a standard maximum grade feet to the mile over a stretch of the road whereformerly grades as high as 68 to feet per mileexisted. Moreover, the maximum curvature has beenreduced from 6 deg. to 5 deg., 4 deg., 3 deg., andon one or two locations as low as 1 deg. The re-sult of this work will be a saving in the amount of line is of a mile greater; but the object aimedat was the reduction of the grade, which has beenbrought down from feet per mile
