Elizabeth Truss, Member of Parliament, visiting the Mathew Walker Factory, who make Christmas puddings. Elizabeth Truss is the MP for South West Norfolk and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. From September 2012 to July 2014, she was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education. Elizabeth founded the Free Enterprise Group of Conservative MPs which campaigns for economic reform and a positive attitude to profit making enterprise. She is a co-author of ‘After the Coalition’ which seeks to challenge the consensus that Britain’s economic decline is inevitable by arguing for the return of a more entrepreneurial and meritocratic culture. The authors published a further book in September 2012 'Britannia Unchained' which argues that Britain needs to learn lessons from rising and reforming nations. Elizabeth also authored the papers “Academic Rigour and Social Mobility” arguing for an end to the bias against serious academic subjects and “Affordable Quality” which argues that child care in Britain fails to provide value for money for both parents and the Government and that change is needed to the structure of the child care market. Prior to entering Parliament, Elizabeth was Deputy Director at the think-tank Reform, where she advocated more rigorous academic standards in schools, a greater focus on tackling serious and organised crime and urgent action to deal with Britain's falling competitiveness. Before that, Elizabeth worked in the energy and telecommunications industry for ten years as a commercial manager and economics director and is a qualified management accountant.
