Thomas, Smithiield, prevailing character of historical statements during the nine-teenth century was very uncritical. Prejudices guided the pen, and aplausible statement became history by dint of sheer repetition. It hasbecome necessary, therefore, by a thorough examination of the records,to start history anew. In this excellent monograph, Mr. Thomas showsthat the old Episcopal clergy of the Colony of Virginia, have beengreatly misrepresented. He proves, what the Rev.
