Phlyctenule in the eye of a 58-year-old male patient. A phlyctenule or phlycten is an inflamed nodule on the conjunctival and corneal epithelium of the eye. The lesion appears here as a pinkish area at the lower right edge of the iris. Phlyctenules occur as an allergic response to foreign antigens, such as certain bacteria and parasites, and are more common in undernourished children living in poor conditions.
