Breast screening. A nurse applies a topical anaesthetic patch to a patient's breast before she undergoes a fine needle aspiration procedure. In fine needle aspiration, a thin needle is inserted into the breast and a sample of tissue collected for analysis. Mammography, ultrasound scans and biopsies all assist the diagnosis of a lump in the breast as benign or malignant (cancerous), and then allow further treatment to be planned. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women.
