Albumasar (787-886), Islamic astronomer. Albumasar was the Latinized name of the Persian astronomer known as Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi. He worked in the court of the Abbasid Islamic caliphate in Baghdad. He is credited with being an important source and transmitter of the ideas of Aristotle from antiquity to medieval Europe. He also wrote on astrology, on religions and dynasties, and on calendars. This artwork is from a Venetian 1515 Latin edition of his work 'De magnis coniunctionibus annorum reuolutionibus', with the name of the author and the Latin title given at top. The artwork shows astronomers using an armillary sphere.
