Caption: Mt Kanchendzonga, Sikkim, India - Mar 2003. Porters warming themselves beside a fire at a camp on the way to Mount Kanchendzonga (in the background). At 8585 meters, Kanchendzonga (Kanchenjunga) is the third highest peak in the world. It is also the most sacred natural icon in Sikkim; the Sikkimese believe that the mountain is a guardien deity from which the first of their race were born. Sikkim is a former Tibetan kingdom of the Nyimga sect - the first school of Tibetan Buddhist thought. Although ethnically and culturally Tibetan, Sikkim has long maintained its independence from Lhasa and was integrated as a state of India in 1974.
