It is clear, both that the translator took considerablelibertv of paraphrase, and that he sometimes did not understandthe Hebrew before him. This latter fact might seem strange,since we know (from the translators preface) that the originalwas probably written about 200-170 , and the translation (bythe authors grandson) in 132, so that the interval of time be-tween them was short; but it is accounted for both by thefact that the translator was no scholar, and by the transitionthrough which the Hebrew language passed during this
