Venice, Italy - 9 May 2017; no people in view. Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. At the very heart of historic Venice is St Marks Square, graced by three iconic buildings - St Marks Basilica, the Ducal Palace and Bell Tower. The DogeÕs Palace - Palazzo Ducale - is a lavish example of Venetian Gothic style. Constructed in 1340, it housed the Doge - the leader of the Venetian Republic over several centuries when the city - state was a world power. After centuries of conquest and decline, it became a state museum in 1923. The Giants' Staircase of the Doge's Palace in Venice was the official entrance to the Doge's Palace and was built between 1483 and 1491; Its name derives from the two marble statues by Sansovino depicting Mars and Neptune, placed here in 1567, which represented the power and dominion of Venice on the mainland (Mars) and the sea (Neptune). This big guy is Mars.
