Oil pollution clean-up. Workers clean an oil-polluted beach and rock pools after an oil spill. Light crude oil appears black and is seen floating on the water and coating the rocks. Workers direct the oil to the suction pipe of a slurry machine. This oil spill occurred in February 1996 on the south coast of Wales when the oil tanker Sea Empress ran aground on the approach to Milford Haven. An estimated 70 000 tons of light crude oil was lost (about half the total cargo). The oil then polluted much of the neighbouring coastline of sandy beaches and rocky shore. Photographed at West Angle Bay, Wales.
