The drones have no sting, for thesting of the female and worker is really amodified ovipositor, or egg-laying apparatus,analogous to the organ which is so con-spicuous in many ichneumons and otherinsects belonging to the same order as thebees. In the autumn the unfortunate dronesare all massacred or else driven forth fromthe hive by the workers, when they speedilyperish. T
