Back.—For the massage of the back the patient lies prone, his arms hanging over the sides of the table or lying close tothe body. The operator stands on the left side of the patient. The muscles of the back are divided into two large groups(Fig. 29): (1) the so-called erector spinse, really a number ofmuscles situated on both sides of the spinous processes, and(2) the broad flat muscles, latissimus dorsi, trapezius, rhom-boidei, and the muscles of the scapulae. The lymphatic drain-age of the latter is directed toward the cervical and axillarglands, while, according to v. Mosengeil, Bum, Hoffa andothers, two different lymphatic systems are situated in differ-ent layers of the erector spinse, one draining into the cervical BACK 95 and the other into the inguinal glands. Therefore theeffleurage of these muscles should be done both in upward. Fig. 29.—Muscles of the back. In this and the following anatomicalpictures the straight lines indicate the direction of the thumb, the dottedlines that of the four fingers. and downward direction—the only muscle group of the bodythus treated—while the flat muscles require massage in thedirection toward the shoulder-joint. 96 APPLIED MASSAGE For the effleiirage of the erector spinse the operatorbegins by grasping the neck, then stroking with both hands
